Our Mission

AFAAGH is a Canadian federally registered not for profit organization founded by a group of Eritrean and Sudanese Canadians. It aims to help Eritrean refugee children and the local Beja people of Eastern Sudan to obtain an education. It is headquartered here in Ottawa, at 1833 Riverside Drive.

As you may or may not know, Eastern Sudan is one of the poorest areas of Sudan, marginalized by the Central government, war and drought. To make things worse, since 1960, Eastern Sudan has been flooded by Eritrean refugees, who were fleeing the war of independence between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and more recently in the last 25 years, the brutal regime of their country. They have made Eastern Sudan their home, however their conditions are miserable. They have no access to clean water, food or education, particularly female refugees. To make matters worse, Eastern Sudan has fallen victim to the wrath of the President of Sudan, Omer Al Bashir, who has been accused by the ICC of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in the region of Darfur.

Furthermore, the isolation of this region and the war has made the local Beja people of Eastern Sudan vulnerable, with no help from their government or outside. These refugees and locals have been ignored by the Sudanese, Eritrean and International community alike, and currently few organizations exists to fulfill their needs. AFAAGH is one of them. We help young girls and boys obtain a proper education, in an area where the high school dropout rate is more than 80%. We provide them with school supplies such as pencils, pens, paper and computers.

We supply them with transportation from home to school, shelter, and clothing and assist them with tuition fees. We have partnered with Bonat, another local not for profit charitable organization, who has been working in the region for the last 15 years, providing students with the help they need to get further in life, with two offices, one in Khartoum and one in Kassala. AFAAGH also has two offices, one here in Ottawa and one in Sudan with a staff of volunteers of six in our Sudan offices.

Activities

AFAAGH association was established in Ottawa Canada, May 2015. It's mission is to assist Eritrean refugees and the local Beja people of Eastern Sudan to obtain one of life's basic necessities: Education. Eastern Sudan has an ever increasingly population of almost 500 000 refugees, of which more than half are children. Most of these children lack the necessary resources to obtain a proper education, and therefore the cycle of poverty continues. AFAAGH helps these children by:

  • Assisting with paying tuition
  • Supplying shelter and transportation to and from school
  • Providing school supplies such as books, pencils, bags… etc.
  • supplying computers and other technologies to assist with learning processes

Providing money for clothes which also included uniforms

These are all things children here in Canada may take for granted, but for the refugees and Beja people of Eastern Sudan, these things are a luxury. Our goal is to help them realize their potential and provide them with the necessary skills and resources they may have never received in their lives. We have established an office in the capital of Sudan, Khartoum. The office has a staff of four volunteers dedicated and hard workers who are willing to work to accomplish our mission.
